Merbau decking has become an increasingly popular choice across Australia within the last 10 years. This stunning hardwood timber is derived from the Kwila tree, which is found in tropical climates. It is a versatile timber that is used in various applications including decking, flooring and furniture.
Merbau is found in tropical areas such as Queensland, Samoa, Fiji & India...
There are several reasons why Merbau decking has become one of the most popular choices within Australia:
Colour
Merbau decking possesses a natural beauty which is lighter and less grainy than Jarrah. The colours ranges from red-brown to an orange golden-brown. With the use of oils or bleach, the colours can be darkened or lightened to create a unique variation of the original colour.
Strength & Durability
Merbau is a Class 1 Hardwood when used in above-ground applications and has a life expectancy of 40+ years. For below-ground applications it is considered to be a Class 3 Hardwood and will last up to 15 years. Provided that it is properly fixed to the underlying substrate it will not twist or warp, even in extreme weather conditions.
Sizes & Price
Merbau timber is available in 90×19 narrow and 140×19 wide boards, which are generally sourced at random lengths. Depending on availability and where it is sourced from, it is generally more affordable when compared with other popular options such as Ironbark, Jarrah and Blackbutt.
Resistant to Fire & Termites
Merbau decking is also highly desirable due to its superior resistance against fungi and termites. It also ideal in rural and fire prone locations with a BAL 29 rating for resistance against fire.
